Antarctic sea-ice extent was 1.98 million km² below the 1981–2010 average for 16 October, a shortfall of 10.9%. All 16 accepted October readings lay below our descriptive historical comparison range. NASA reports that September’s winter maximum was the third lowest in the satellite record. These comparisons describe coverage; they do not establish local wildlife impacts. The newer, incomplete reading is excluded.
